CAO + Languages: Pure Language Courses

Welcome to the first post of the CAO + Languages series!

If you’re anything like me (a HUGE language nerd), then you might think to yourself: ‘I’d love to study JUST languages at college. Not science and languages, not business and languages, just languages. Are there any courses like that in Ireland?’ I’m happy to tell you that the answer is yes! Let’s take a look at some of the courses on offer that only deal with languages and language-related subjects.


DC155 Applied Language and Translation Studies

  • Two languages from French, Spanish, German, Japanese and Mandarin Chinese

  • Language-related modules: translation studies, literature


DN541 Modern Languages

  • Two or three languages from French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese

  • Language-related modules: literature, linguistics, cultural studies


TR016 Deaf Studies

  • Irish Sign Language (ISL)

  • Language-related modules: interpreting, linguistics


TR022 Early and Modern Irish

  • Early Irish (up to 12th century) and Modern Irish (12th century onwards)

  • Language-related modules: poetry, language history, Scottish Gaelic


TR040 Middle Eastern and European Languages and Cultures

  • Two languages total

  • One language from Arabic, Hebrew and Turkish

  • One language from French, Spanish, German, Italian, Russian and Polish

  • Language-related modules: history, culture, literature


GY128 Global Languages

  • Two languages from German, French, Italian, Spanish and Gaeilge

  • Language-related modules: linguistics, translation studies


GY136 Gaeilge agus Léann an Aistriúcháin

  • Modern Irish

  • Translation Studies - qualifies you to be a professional Irish translator

  • Language-related modules: sociolinguistics, translation history


LM044 Applied Languages

  • Two or three languages from French, German, Spanish, Gaeilge and Japanese

  • Language-related modules: linguistics, language and technology


CK110 World Languages

  • Two or three languages from Gaeilge, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Latin, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese and Korean

  • Language-related modules: semiotics, translation studies
